GGFOA awards up to two scholarships each year to students who are pursuing studies in a public finance area or public administration or a career in government finance.

Georgia Government Finance Officers Association Scholarship

The scholarship recognizes outstanding performance in the study of public finance at the undergraduate and graduate level and encourages careers in state and local government.

The GGFOA Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate or graduate students who meet the eligibility requirements and are preparing for a career in public finance.

Amount of award

$3,000 for full-time enrollment.

Award Announcement

Recipient will be notified prior to the annual conference, with official announcement at the GGFOA Annual Conference.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Undergraduate or graduate students who are currently enrolled or accepted (for graduate school) as a full-time student at a Georgia college or university in a public administration, business, or other applicable program leading to a degree that prepares them for careers in public finance.
  • Nomination by the head of the applicable program (e.g., public administration, accounting, finance).
  • A permanent, full-time employee of a governmental entity may qualify if enrolled in a course-load equivalent to 6 semester hours. A letter from the employer certifying that the candidate is a permanent, full-time employee is required. Award amounts for a permanent, full-time employee of a governmental entity are based on the number of enrolled semester hours:
    6–8 hours: $1,500
    9–11 hours: $2,250
    12+ hours: $3,000
  • Provide official copy of transcript for proof of hours of study per quarter or semester.

Criteria for Scholarship Award

  • Plans to pursue graduate or undergraduate (junior or senior level) studies in a public finance area, public administration, or a career in government finance.
  • Must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Letter of recommendation by head of public administration, business, or other applicable program.
  • Preference will be given to GGFOA members and employees of GGFOA governmental entities who are eligible for in-state tuition.

Applicants must submit the following documents for consideration by the Scholarship Selection Committee.
  • Application form. (PDF download)
  • Statement of proposed career plan and/or (if applicable) plan of study.
  • Undergraduate and/or graduate transcripts.
  • GRE, GMAT, or LSAT score, if available. (Photocopy of official report is acceptable.)
  • Resumé.
  • Academic department or program head's letter of nomination.

The GGFOA's Scholarship Selection Committee will review all applications and make a final selection for the award. The winners will be notified in writing on or about Sept. 15, 2007. The scholarship winners will be invited to attend and receive their awards at the GGFOA's Annual Conference.
